The National Board of Revenue (NBR) is set to intensify scrutiny on tax identification number (TIN) holders who fail to submit their tax returns.
NBR Chairman Md Abdur Rahman Khan has instructed officials to issue notices to these taxpayers, investigate their income, expenses, and assets, and ensure taxes are applied according to the law. The findings will be reported during monthly revenue meetings.
The directives were announced during the NBR’s Customs, VAT, and Income Tax divisions’ monthly meetings for July 2025-26, held on August 28 in Dhaka.
Rahman stressed enhancing intelligence operations to detect tax evasion and expedite tax collection by processing returns effectively. He also emphasized the importance of ensuring lawful revenue collection and trade facilitation within Customs and VAT divisions.
He directed officials not to unnecessarily lock bins for compliant importers and exporters, and to justify every action in the revenue meetings. Furthermore, he ordered VAT registration for all legally required entities and called for severe penalties for tax evaders.
For bond facilities, Rahman instructed that all processes be moved online within a month, ensuring accountability for delays. He also announced that the bond licences of importers selling duty-free goods on the market would be revoked, and officials involved in misuse would face consequences.
Regarding income tax, Rahman urged increased manpower to assist taxpayers with e-return filing, rapid settlement of audits, and the linking of eTIN with eTDS systems. He also called for transparency in audit selections and weekly monitoring of non-filers, evasion cases, and pending audits.
