The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has launched an online system to allow taxpayers to apply for an extension of time to submit their income tax returns.

A notification issued on Monday stated that filing income tax returns online is now mandatory for almost all individual taxpayers for the 2025–2026 fiscal year, with some exceptions.

The deadline for submission this year has been extended to 31 March.

However, individual taxpayers can request an additional 90-day extension by submitting a written application to the relevant tax commissioner before 31 March.

The newly introduced online system enables taxpayers to apply for the extension quickly, transparently and conveniently.

Taxpayers can log in to the e-Return system and use the ‘Time Extension’ menu to submit their application.

The relevant tax commissioner will approve or reject applications online. If approved, taxpayers can file their returns within the extended period without incurring fines or additional taxes.

To apply online, taxpayers must be registered in the e-Return system and submit their requests before 31 March.

Those for whom online filing is not mandatory can apply for an extension either online or in writing at the relevant tax circle.

The NBR has urged all individual taxpayers to submit their 2025–2026 income tax returns through the e-Return system by 31 March or within the extended period approved by the tax commissioner.

Nearly 50 lakh individual taxpayers have already registered in the e-Return system, and around 41 lakh have filed their returns for the current fiscal year.
