A case has been filed over the harassment of Bangladesh cricketer Nayeem Hasan, naming three policemen as accused.
Nayeem’s brother Sabbir Hasan lodged the case at Khulshi Police Station on Saturday morning. He confirmed the matter to Times of Bangladesh over phone.
The accused are Shafik, a sub‑inspector of Khulshi Police Station; Constable Rashed of the same station; and Sohel, who posed as a DB officer. Sabbir said he had yet to collect a copy of the case due to a press conference.
Aminur Rashid, assistant commissioner (Media) of Chattogram Metropolitan Police, said that while the case decision was not yet final, three officers had already been withdrawn from duty.
The incident occurred late Friday night when Nayeem returned to Chattogram from Dhaka. As he travelled home by CNG auto‑rickshaw, several men stopped him at Lal Khan Bazar, pushed him, seized the vehicle, and ignored his companions’ attempts to confirm his identity.
He was treated as a suspect and forcibly taken to Khulshi Police Station, where he said he was harassed again, the official added.
Nayeem said, “Under the Lal Khan Bazar flyover, a traffic policeman stopped us. SI Shafik pushed me inside the auto‑rickshaw, locked it, and told me, ‘You are an accused, keep quiet.’ He grabbed my throat, ignored everyone confirming my identity, and later beat me with a stick inside the station.”
“Even in front of the OC, I was told to lower my eyes while speaking,” he also said.
His phone was seized and only after calls from acquaintances reached the OC did police realise their mistake and release him, the spinner added.
Police later explained the operation was based on information about smuggling, but admitted officers had failed to follow proper procedure. North Division DC Amirul Islam said the matter is under serious investigation.
Nayeem, who had just returned from the Dhaka Premier League, has long been a familiar face in national and domestic cricket.
The incident has sparked outrage in sporting circles. Bangladesh Cricket Board director Sirajuddin Mohammad Alamgir condemned the harassment, calling Nayeem “a national cricketer and pride of Chattogram,” and demanded exemplary punishment for those involved.d.
