The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the Bangladesh Cricketers’ Welfare Association (CWAB) have strongly condemned the reported harassment of Bangladesh spinner Nayeem Hasan in Chattogram and called for a full investigation into the incident.
In a statement on Saturday, the BCB expressed “deep concern” over the reported incident involving Nayeem and said it viewed the matter “with the utmost seriousness”.
“The Board strongly condemns the unacceptable and inappropriate conduct displayed towards the player. Such treatment of a national athlete is deeply regrettable and warrants immediate attention,” the BCB said.
The board added that it expects “a thorough and impartial investigation” and urged the relevant authorities to take appropriate action against anyone found responsible.
The BCB also confirmed that it has remained in close contact with Nayeem and his family since learning about the incident. The board said it has engaged with authorities and local administration in Chattogram to help ensure a proper resolution.
“The Bangladesh Cricket Board reiterates its commitment to safeguarding the welfare, dignity and rights of all its players and will continue to monitor developments closely,” the statement added.
CWAB also issued a strongly worded response, condemning what it described as physical abuse and harassment of the national cricketer.
The players’ body urged Chattogram Metropolitan Police to take strict action against every officer involved.
“Bangladesh Cricketers’ Welfare Association strongly condemns the physical abuse and harassment of Bangladesh cricketer Nayeem Hasan by police,” CWAB said.
According to the association, police stopped Nayeem near Lalkhan Bazar while he was returning home to Chattogram after a Dhaka Premier League match. CWAB alleged that officers behaved aggressively from the beginning and physically assaulted the spinner despite bystanders identifying him as a Bangladesh international cricketer.
CWAB added that the alleged mistreatment continued after Nayeem was taken to Khulshi Police Station and only stopped after he contacted people for assistance.
“Such an incident is unacceptable for any citizen of the country,” the association said.
CWAB president Mohammad Mithun has already spoken with Nayeem and assured him of the support of Bangladesh’s cricketers.
“The country’s cricketers are with him,” CWAB said.
The incident has triggered widespread concern across Bangladesh cricket, with both the governing body and the players’ association now pressing for accountability and a transparent investigation.
