The government is set to launch a nationwide awareness campaign to combat violence against women and children, emphasising that social resistance alongside strict law enforcement is essential to tackle the problem.

Women and Children Affairs Minister Prof AZM Zahid Hossain said awareness building is a continuous process, but intensified efforts are necessary at times. “We have a responsibility to make people aware,” he said.

The minister noted that the government has adopted a zero-tolerance policy against violence targeting women and children, as well as against drug abuse, extortion, terrorism, and land grabbing.

Referring to recent incidents that have raised public concern, Zahid said the Ministry will soon roll out awareness activities from the national level to grassroots communities. The campaign will engage public representatives, teachers, religious leaders, social organisations, professionals from various sectors, and media personnel to ensure wide public participation.

Zahid highlighted that law enforcement alone is insufficient to combat such crimes, stressing the importance of promoting social awareness and moral values. “It is necessary to educate people about the law, their rights and responsibilities, and what is right and wrong,” he said.

The minister called upon the media to strengthen public opinion against violence, child abuse, rape, and drug-related offences, including through social media platforms, and sought cooperation from journalists and digital content creators.

Addressing legal measures, Zahid said the country’s laws are largely adequate, but challenges remain in enforcement and societal attitudes. “The main problems lie in law enforcement, people’s mindset and social degradation,” he said, calling for enhanced moral and religious education to strengthen humanity, justice, and social responsibility.

He emphasised that preventing violence against women and children requires collective effort from the government, political parties, social organisations, and citizens. “Only united efforts can build a safer society for women and children,” he added.

Separately, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman announced that the maximum punishment for the killer of child Ramisa will be ensured within the next month.

He underscored that the government will not tolerate child abuse or violence against women and stressed the importance of reviving the country’s long-standing religious, social, and cultural values in public life.
