A child has died with measles symptoms at Rangpur Medical College Hospital in the past 24 hours, raising the death toll there to six.
ANM Tanvir Chowdhury, focal person of the hospital’s Special Committee for Measles Treatment, confirmed the development around 12pm on Wednesday.
According to the Rangpur Divisional Health Director’s office, 116 tests were conducted in the division between 1 January and 30 March, identifying 60 measles cases and six rubella cases.
Of the measles patients, 29 are admitted at Rangpur Medical College Hospital, 10 in Nilphamari, five in Rangpur, four each in Dinajpur and Thakurgaon, three at Dinajpur Medical College Hospital, two in Panchagarh, and one each in Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, and Gaibandha.
Between 9am Tuesday and 9am Wednesday, 16 new patients were admitted to district and upazila hospitals in the division. To date, 1,403 patients have been admitted, of whom 1,333 have returned home after treatment.
Seventy remain admitted, including 22 at Rangpur Medical College Hospital, where two new patients were admitted in the last 24 hours.
Rangpur Divisional Health Deputy Director Wazed Ali said patients should be taken to hospital as soon as symptoms appear.
He added that while the measles situation in the division is currently under control, “it cannot be said what will happen in the future.”
