NCP convener and opposition Chief Whip Nahid Islam has strongly warned against attempts to question the legitimacy of the national referendum in court, stating that such moves would force the party to mobilize on the streets.
Speaking at the NCP’s Cumilla divisional Iftar and prayer gathering at the Station Club on Tuesday, Nahid Islam said, “Efforts are underway to challenge the people’s mandate through the judiciary. We will not accept this. If the referendum results are taken to court, we too may be compelled to take action in the streets. We do not want to repeat the July-style slogans-High Court or streets-but we will act if forced.”
He called for the swift implementation of reforms based on the referendum outcomes and urged that the people’s verdict not be undermined by judicial processes.
On Bangladesh’s relationship with India, Nahid Islam remarked, “Sheikh Hasina and the killers of martyr Osman Hadi must be sent back to Bangladesh first. Only then can proper ties with India be established. Otherwise, there is no scope for friendly relations.”
Senior NCP leaders, including Secretary Akhtar Hossain, Chief Organiser (South) Hasnat Abdullah, Chief Organiser (North) Sarjis Alam, Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary, and spokesperson Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, along with central and divisional members were present at the event.
Leaders from the BNP and 11-party alliance, including Jamaat-e-Islami, also attended.
