Bangladesh’s nine-wicket victory over Australia in Darwin has given the team confidence, but former Bangladesh batter Shahriar Nafees believes the focus must now shift to maintaining that level in the second Test.
Bangladesh secured a memorable win against the World Test Championship leaders in the opening Test, producing a strong all-round performance across four days. Nafees said the result was a source of pride for everyone connected with Bangladesh cricket, but stressed that the team now needs to show consistency.
“First of all, we are all very proud as Bangladeshis. Yesterday was a special day for us, especially those who are involved in cricket. I am sure everyone was very happy and emotional. It has inspired the whole nation,” Nafees said.
The former opener said the next Test would be important in showing that Bangladesh’s performance in Darwin was not an isolated result. He believes the team has developed considerably in recent years and can compete with strong opponents in different conditions.
“As supporters, we hope Bangladesh can maintain the consistency with which they have been playing. Australia are a very strong team and will try to come back strongly. But the way Bangladesh have played over the last three or four years, we are a strong opponent against any team in any conditions,” he said.
Nafees also reflected on Bangladesh’s previous meeting with Australia in Test cricket. He was part of the Bangladesh side that played Australia in the 2006 Test at Fatullah, where the hosts came close to securing a historic victory before Australia escaped with a draw.
“The pain of losing that match in 2006 was huge. But the current team is much more mature. Over the last 20 years, the performance graph of our players has improved a lot,” Nafees said.
The former batter also pointed to the team’s ability to handle pressure in Darwin.
“I could not win a Test match during my nine-year international career, but the current team is winning Tests regularly. The more Test cricket we play, the more our standard will improve,” he said.
Nafees expects Australia to respond strongly in the second Test, particularly with the match being played in familiar home conditions. Bangladesh, he believes, will need to maintain the discipline and consistency that helped them secure the first victory.
