Coding lessons are often hailed as essential for preparing children to thrive in a technology-driven world. They promise to sharpen critical thinking, boost problem-solving skills, and open doors to future careers. Music, by contrast, is too often dismissed as a hobby or an “extra.”
But new research from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) suggests that music lessons may lay an even stronger foundation for lifelong learning than coding. The study found that while coding primarily activates brain regions tied to logic, music stimulates both hemispheres of the brain simultaneously.
Musical training strengthens memory, enhances attention span, improves problem-solving, and sharpens language skills. It taps into creativity, emotions, and collaboration, offering the brain a far more holistic workout.
Children who learn music show overall improved academic performance as well. They develop stronger focus, better adaptability and greater cognitive flexibility. These traits make it easier to pick up complex subjects later, including coding itself. In other words, learning music first does not compete with coding- it simply makes learning coding and other skills easier.
For parents and educators, this research offers a valuable lesson: music is not a distraction from “serious” learning, but one of the most powerful tools to nurture intelligence, resilience, and creativity in young minds.
In Bangladesh, where parents often prioritise math, science, and now coding, music is rarely seen as foundational. This evidence should prompt a pause and perhaps a rethink. Sometimes, the keys to a brighter future may be found not on a keyboard, but on a piano.
