State Minister for Health MA Muhit has directed the rapid completion of 40 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds at the National Institute of Diseases of the Chest and Hospital (NIDCH) in Mohakhali.
The facility is designed to provide free ICU services for underprivileged patients and ensure advanced, affordable treatment for the public.
The state minister issued these directives on Sunday following a discussion meeting held to mark World Tuberculosis Day. During his visit, Muhit inspected the newly built 40-bed ICU unit situated within the hospital’s specialised Asthma Centre.
He also toured several floors of the hospital that had remained derelict and abandoned for years. These spaces have been renovated to house the sophisticated ICU beds and modern medical equipment.
“This unit must be launched as soon as possible so that common people can access ICU services at a low and affordable cost,” the state minister said during the inspection.
He emphasised that the government’s objective is to build a “healthy Bangladesh” by ensuring advanced medical care reaches every citizen and providing easy access to quality treatment for the poor.
According to hospital sources, the new ICU block was developed by repurposing long-neglected areas of the facility. Once fully operational, the unit is expected to reduce the reliance on private hospitals for patients suffering from complex chest and respiratory complications.
Muhit also provided further instructions regarding the enhancement of the hospital’s overall environment and medical facilities.
