Helena Begum, the prime accused in the murder of Saudi expatriate Mokarram Mia, whose body was recovered in eight pieces from the city’s Mugda area, has given a confessional statement in court.
Following the recording of her statement, the court ordered her to be sent to jail.
On Tuesday, the investigating officer of the case, Sub-Inspector (SI) Enamul Haque Mithu of Mugda Police Station, produced the accused before the court and filed an application to record their statements.
In response, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin recorded Helena’s confession before ordering her imprisonment. In a separate development, the court ordered the victim’s minor daughter, Halima Akter, to be sent to a juvenile development centre.
Judge Md Moniruzzaman of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-5 passed the order to send the girl to the Kishori Unnayan Kendra (Girls’ Development Centre) in Konabari, Gazipur.
According to case documents, the murder was the result of a family feud and disputes involving an extramarital affair between Mokarram Mia and his wife, Helena Begum. On the night of May 13, the victim was killed in a pre-planned attack at a residence in the Manda area of Mugda.
The perpetrators used a hammer, a ‘boti’ (traditional chopper), and other sharp weapons to commit the murder. The body was subsequently dismembered into eight pieces, wrapped in black polythene, and dumped in various locations.
Police recovered several body parts wrapped in polythene the following afternoon from a gap beneath a building on Abdul Karim Road. The victim’s identity was confirmed through fingerprint matching using information technology.
Following the detention of Helena Begum, 40, and the minor Halima Akter, the victim’s severed head was recovered from the Maniknagar Balur Math area based on information provided during their interrogation.
The police noted that Helena Begum voluntarily agreed to provide a confessional statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, which was deemed essential for a proper investigation.
A murder case has been filed with Mugda Police Station, and the investigation remains ongoing.
