Authorities of Mymensingh Medical College have declared a seven-day closure following a clash between two groups of students at a dormitory.
All classes and examinations have been suspended, and students have been instructed to vacate the halls.
The decision was taken early Saturday at an emergency meeting of the academic council, held hours after the incident.
A three-member committee has been formed to investigate the matter.
According to college sources, the clash originated from a dispute between two third-year students, Md Muaj and Mir Hamidur, over the collection of motorcycle fuel through an associate.
The disagreement escalated into a physical confrontation , during which Muaj was allegedly beaten and forced out of a room.
Later, when Hamidur went outside for tea, he was reportedly attacked with a steel pipe, triggering a chase and counter-chase between the two groups that turned into a wider clash in the dormitory area.
At least two students were injured in the incident. Muaj, who sustained serious injuries, was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment, while Hamidur was admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
Police rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control, though tension persisted on campus for several hours. Additional police were deployed to maintain order and prevent further unrest.
Sources said Muaj is affiliated with a faction led by Tanvir Abdullah, convener of the college unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, while Hamidur is a supporter of a group led by senior joint convener Nure Jawad Rutap.
Principal of the medical college Nazmul Alam Khan said the emergency academic council meeting, held around 4am, decided to close the college for seven days.
“All classes and examinations have been suspended, and students have been asked to vacate the dormitories,” he said.
He added that a three-member investigation committee has been formed, headed by Prof Soheli Jannat Sultana, head of the Anatomy Department. Prof Mohammad Rafiqul Haque, head of the Biochemistry Department, has been made member secretary, while Prof Shamimul Masud Ahmed, head of the Pharmacology Department, will serve as a member.
The committee has been asked to submit its report within seven working days.
Kotwali Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Shibirul Islam said the situation is now under control and additional police have been deployed in the area.
He added that one person, identified as Nafiul Islam, has been taken into custody for questioning, and legal proceedings are underway.
