Abdul Hannan Masud, the lawmaker for Noakhali-6, raised concerns regarding his personal security in the Jatiya Sangsad on Monday. He submitted a notice under Rule 164 during the parliamentary session to voice his demands for protection.
During his speech, the National Citizen Party (NCP) senior joint chief coordinator alleged that he has been the target of continuous attacks since the pre-election period, which have persisted following the polls. He further claimed that the administration has failed to take any effective measures regarding these incidents.
The MP highlighted that although many of his activists and a Bangladesh Television (BTV) journalist were injured in his constituency, Hatiya, there have been no visible steps taken by the authorities.
Masud stated that he was compelled to bring the matter to the floor of the House as the situation had not improved and he saw no other alternative.
Following the presentation of the notice, Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal described the situation as “unfortunate” and directed Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed to take the necessary measures.
In response, the home minister assured that the government is committed to establishing the rule of law and considers the safety of every citizen a priority. He stated that the government would take serious notice and effective action if any citizen’s life is at risk.
The minister advised Hannan Masud to officially lodge a General Diary (GD) or file a case regarding the matter.
