Police have recovered an unexploded mortar shell from a scrap dealer’s shop in Jaflong Bazar, Sylhet. The suspicious object was retrieved on Sunday afternoon.
According to initial police sources, the recovered mortar shell could be from the 1971 Liberation War period.
Local sources report that police were informed after an object resembling a mortar shell was noticed at the shop of scrap dealer Rubel Mia in Jaflong Bazar. Police subsequently arrived and recovered the item.
Shop owner Rubel Mia stated that an unidentified person had sold him the object as a “submersible motor.” Later, he tried unsuccessfully to break it apart. At one point, an online search revealed it to be an unexploded mortar shell.
After confirming the matter, the shopkeeper himself informed the police. Upon receiving the tip off, police from Gowainghat Police Station quickly reached the spot, recovered the mortar shell, and have now kept it under safe police custody.
Officer-in-Charge (in-charge) of Gowainghat Police Station, Md Maniruzzaman, stated that necessary safety measures have been ensured following the recovery of the shell. Further legal and necessary steps will be taken after discussion with higher authorities.
