A mobile court sentenced a milk trader to six months’ simple imprisonment and imposed a fine of Tk50,000 for the crime of producing counterfeit milk in Satkhira.
Assistant Commissioner Navil Hossain Tamim confirmed the matter on Tuesday. The action followed a joint operation by the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority and the Directorate of National Consumers’ Right Protection.
According to the authorities, the trader, named Ratan Majhi, was found guilty of extracting cream from milk and subsequently mixing it with palm oil and baking soda to create a fake product.
During the operation, authorities seized around 120 litres of adulterated milk, 14 litres of palm oil, and nearly 2 kilograms of baking soda from his premises.
Ratan was penalised under the Consumer Rights Protection Act. In addition to the six-month jail term, he was ordered to pay a fine of Tk50,000.
