BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas has alleged that certain quarters are conspiring against patriotic forces in the country, claiming attempts to create unrest under the pretext of elections.
Speaking as the chief guest at a prayer session (Dua mahfil) and memorial programme organised by the BIRDEM General Hospital Officers and Employees Unity Council at Shahbagh on Monday, Abbas said those fomenting violence and mob unrest “never supported Bangladesh’s independence” and have misread the public pulse.
He recalled the 2018 general elections, saying BNP leaders and activists faced widespread attacks, and his residence was turned into a temporary hospital.
“Three ambulances worked tirelessly to take the injured to various hospitals after attacks by Awami League activists. Despite enduring severe persecution, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia never left the country and protected us at great personal risk,” he said.
Abbas also alleged that the party has faced enforced disappearances and targeted killings over the past 17 years and warned that attempts to silence BNP continue, including coordinated social media campaigns with significant funding to spread misinformation against him personally.
“I am being deliberately targeted. Those spreading propaganda are misinformed. If such people enter parliament, it will be a matter of concern for the parliament,” he added.
Dr Rafiqul Islam, BNP Health Affairs Secretary, spoke as a special guest, while other attendees included Bangladesh Diabetic Association Secretary General Md Saifuddin, BIRDEM Hospital Director Dr Md Nasir Uddin, Unity Council convener Dr Anwarul Islam, and several senior hospital officials and doctors.
