The Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology has dismissed recent social media allegations against Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, special assistant to chief adviser for Posts, Telecommunications, and ICT, calling them “baseless and deliberately motivated.”
A press release from the ministry clarified that claims linking Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb to the implementation of the National Equipment Identity Register (NEIR) lack any supporting evidence.
Quoting Faiz Ahmad, the statement said, “NEIR is being implemented in the interest of state discipline and security. The BTRC is consulting relevant parties to control illegal handsets. Yet, holding me responsible over a single Facebook post is unintended.”
Faiz Ahmad also addressed the questioning of The Daily Kaler Kantho online editor Mizanur Rahman Sohel by the Detective Branch (DB) Police, stating that the action “falls within the routine jurisdiction of law enforcement” and that he had no involvement. The ministry confirmed that the journalist was safely returned home after questioning.
“I have no personal or professional relationship with journalist Mizanur Rahman,” Faiz Ahmad said. “The type of propaganda being spread undermines freedom of expression.”
The ministry warned that some online claims could mislead the public and emphasised that these campaigns are not based on verified information. Citizens were urged to refrain from acting on unverified reports.
