BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that to establish democracy in the country, it is necessary to move away from “mob violence.”
Fakhrul made this comment at a book launching and documentary screening event titled “BNP in the ‘2024 Mass Uprising” held in a city hotel in Gulshan on Wednesday.
Before the discussion began, a documentary on the July uprising was presented.
Participating in the discussion, Mirza Fakhrul said that the essence of democracy is freedom of expression, and for that, differing opinions must be tolerated. But creating mob violence whenever there is dissent destroying everything, beating someone to death is not democracy.
The BNP Secretary General said that to achieve true and sustainable democracy, democratic institutions must be built effectively. An independent judiciary, an independent media, and an effective parliament must be established. The rule of law, people’s social dignity, and human rights must be ensured. Mirza Fakhrul commented that for this, political parties as well as all members of society must work together.
The event was chaired by BNP Standing Committee member Abdul Moin Khan. Other speakers included Standing Committee member Selima Rahman, BNP Publicity Secretary Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie, Biplobi Workers Party General Secretary Saiful Haque, NPP Chairman Fariduzzaman Farhad, and the book’s editor Babul Talukder and Jatiya Zia Parishad leader Professor BM Nagib Hossain also spoke.
