The term of the investigation commission formed to determine the cause, responsibilities, and damages of the plane crash incident at Uttara’s Milestone School and College has been extended by one month.
A notification regarding this was issued by the Cabinet Division on Thursday.
The term of the formed investigation commission ended on August 23. The term has been extended from August 24 to September 23.
The nine-member investigation commission is chaired by former Secretary AKM Zafar Ullah Khan. The investigation commission was initially asked to submit its report within four weeks.
This investigation commission was formed to identify the context, cause, responsibilities, and damages of the tragic incident of a Bangladesh Air Force plane crashing at Uttara’s Milestone School and College on July 21, and to mark other issues related to the incident.
The members of the commission include Former Assistant Chief of Air Force (Administration) Air Vice Mashal (Retd.) M Saeed Hossain, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, Divisional Commissioner of Dhaka, Urban Planner Professor Adil Mohammad Khan, Professor Md. Ashikur Rahman of the Mechanical Engineering Department at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), and Barrister Ashraf Ali.
The office of the Dhaka Divisional Commissioner is providing secretarial support to the investigation commission.
The investigation commission will uncover the context, cause, and responsibilities of the tragic plane crash at Uttara’s Milestone School and College on July 21. It will assess all damages, including the loss of lives and serious injuries of students, teachers, and others, and identify other issues related to the incident.
Additionally, it will examine the legal and administrative aspects related to the construction of Milestone School and College and other structures in the immediate vicinity of the airport, as well as the positional accuracy and safe operation of the flying zone.
The commission will provide recommendations on accident prevention, training aircraft flights, construction in the flying zone, and emergency measures in the event of catastrophic accidents. It will recommend necessary steps to avoid the recurrence of such tragic incidents.
The notification also stated that the investigation commission can inspect any location in Bangladesh and summon and interrogate any person.
On July 21, an Air Force fighter jet crashed on the campus of Milestone School and College in Uttara, Dhaka. The incident resulted in the deaths of 34 people, including the pilot, Flight Lieutenant Md Tawkir Islam. Among the deceased, 27 were students of the institution. Many burn victims are still undergoing treatment in hospitals.
