Picture a player who cannot outrun the fastest defenders, who is a full head shorter than most of the back line trying to stop him, and who is closer to forty than thirty. On paper, that description reads like a player in decline. On the pitch, it is Lionel Messi at this World Cup — still the equal top scorer of the tournament, level with France’s Kylian Mbappé on six goals.
Messi does not seem formidable. He is 39, stands 1.70 metres tall, shorter than nearly every defender who marks him.
That contradiction tends to get filed away as magic: Messi is a once-in-a-generation talent who simply defies the rules everyone else plays by. It’s a comforting explanation, but a lazy one, because it treats his body as an obstacle and his skill as the miracle that overcomes it.
A more useful question flips the premise entirely. What if Messi isn’t beating the odds of athleticism at all — what if soccer was never the athletic contest we assumed it was?
Johan Cruyff, the Dutch philosopher-footballer, saw this decades before sports science caught up to him. He once said, “The sports press often confuses speed with insight,” arguing that a player who moves earlier only looks faster. On another occasion, reflecting on timing, he put it just as sharply: “There is only one moment in which you can arrive in time.”
Both remarks point to the same idea: what we perceive as physical speed is often just a head start earned by perceiving the game faster than everyone else. Legs don’t buy that head start. Eyes do.
This is no longer just philosophy — it’s measurable. Gert-Jan Pepping, Professor of Human Movement Sciences at Australian Catholic University, has spent more than a decade researching exactly this phenomenon in his work published in online journal The Conversation. Pepping and colleagues fitted motion sensors to the heads of players ranging from youth academies to senior professionals, tracking how frequently and how widely they turned their heads to scan the field before receiving the ball.
The results were consistent: players who scanned more often before the ball arrived released their next pass faster, were more willing to turn upfield into space rather than retreat safely and were more likely to attempt passes that genuinely threatened the opposition’s defense. Pepping distinguishes between two functions of this behavior — orientation, the broad early scanning that maps out where danger and opportunity exist across the whole pitch, and specification, the narrower, later glances that fine-tune the execution of a single pass. Orientation, he argues, is the foundation that gets overlooked, precisely because it happens away from the ball, when nothing visibly dramatic is occurring.
Applied to Messi, this reframes everything. Watch him during the thirty seconds before he touches the ball and his head is rarely still — checking one shoulder, then the other, cataloguing where defenders stand and where gaps are forming. By the time possession reaches him, the hardest work is already finished. The touch, the turn, the pass are just the execution of a decision made moments earlier, based on information almost nobody else on the pitch had yet gathered.
Numbers explain the mechanism, but John Barnes, the former England international, offers the human texture around it. Asked whether he was surprised by Messi’s continued dominance, Barnes pointed not to genetics but to game intelligence and temperament, noting that Messi “doesn’t have to run around too much” precisely because of how well he manages a match and how much his teammates trust and defer to him. Barnes’ broader point was that Messi’s humility and rapport with teammates mean the team organizes itself around him rather than the other way around — reducing the physical burden he needs to carry in the first place.
That observation dovetails neatly with the scanning research. A player who is trusted to receive the ball in dangerous areas, and who has teammates actively creating passing lanes for him, needs even less raw athleticism to be devastating. Perception and social trust compound each other.
None of this erases the value of technique, fitness, or tactical structure — Pepping is careful to note those still matter. But they only matter once a player has correctly perceived the situation in front of them. A perfectly struck pass aimed at a gap that no longer exists is worthless.
Soccer has spent a century building bigger, faster, stronger athletes in weight rooms. Far less institutional effort has gone into training the skill Messi has quietly mastered: looking before you need to. As Cruyff hinted and Pepping has now measured, the next time a 39-year-old built like an ordinary person out-thinks a defense at a World Cup, the temptation is to watch his feet. The more instructive move is to watch his head.
