A man has been sentenced to death and three others to life imprisonment in a case over the gang rape of a young woman at the MC College dormitory in Sylhet. Four other accused have been acquitted.
Judge Swapan Kumar Sarkar of the Speedy Trial Tribunal delivered the verdict around 12pm Tuesday, Public Prosecutor Abul Hossain confirmed.
The convict sentenced to death is Saifur Rahman. Those sentenced to life imprisonment are Shah Mahbubur Rahman alias Roni, Tarek‑ul Islam alias Tarek, and Arjun Laskar. All were involved in Chhatra League (BCL) politics.
The four acquitted are Ainuddin alias Ainul, Misbaul Islam alias Rajon, Robiul, and Mahfuzur Rahman.
According to court sources, the case was transferred from the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal to the Speedy Trial Tribunal in May last year, after which testimony began.
According to the case statement, on the night of 25 September 2020, a 20‑year‑old woman was gang‑raped at the MC College dormitory after her husband was confined.
Following the incident, her husband filed a case with Shah Paran Police Station under Sylhet Metropolitan Police, naming six accused and two unidentified persons.
Although the accused fled after the incident, all eight were arrested within three days in joint operations by police and RAB.
After investigation, on 3 December 2021, Shah Paran police submitted a charge sheet accusing the eight before the court.
