Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University (MBSTU) held an exchange-of-views meeting with class representatives from various departments on Tuesday to help shape a 50-year Academic Master Plan covering 2026 to 2075.
The meeting was organised by the Academic Master Plan Formulation Committee at 11am in the seminar room of the university’s Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (BGE) department. It was chaired by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr ABM Shahidul Islam, who also heads the Academic Master Plan Formulation Committee, with Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Md Anisur Rahman attending as special guest.
In his address, Islam said a university’s long-term development plan is not limited to infrastructure alone; it is built on quality education, an up-to-date curriculum, research, innovation, skilled human resources and a student-friendly academic environment. He said the master plan would play an important role in transforming MBSTU into an internationally standard, research-driven, modern university over the next 50 years, adding that students’ opinions and expectations would be given due weight in the plan.
Islam added that today’s students would become tomorrow’s teachers, researchers, entrepreneurs and leaders, and that an effective long-term academic plan could not be drawn up without understanding their experiences, needs and future expectations. He said the university aimed to produce a realistic, timely and forward-looking master plan through active student participation.
Rahman said the 50-year plan represented an important blueprint for MBSTU’s future path. As education and technology continue to evolve, he said, the needs of future generations must be reflected in an integrated academic structure covering modern education, research, innovation, skills development and employment.
At the meeting, committee expert members Professor Dr Kazi Matin Uddin Ahmed of Dhaka University’s Geology department and Professor Dr Saifuddin Md Tarique of Dhaka University’s Computer Science and Engineering department presented a draft of the academic master plan.
Also in attendance were committee member Professor Dr AKM Mohiuddin of MBSTU’s BGE department; member-secretary Professor Dr Md Khairul Islam of the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology department; Professor Dr Md Fazlul Karim, director of the Student Welfare and Counselling Centre; Proctor Professor Dr Monir Morshed; along with other teachers, officials and class representatives from various departments.
During the discussion, class representatives shared views and recommendations on the university’s academic environment, department-specific facilities, expanding research opportunities, modern laboratories and classrooms, library facilities, technology-based education, curriculum modernisation, skills development, internationalisation, industry-academia cooperation, housing and other student-friendly facilities as part of the 50-year academic development plan.
The class representatives said they hoped the 2026–2075 Academic Master Plan, formulated with input from all relevant stakeholders, would help elevate MBSTU’s standards in education, research and innovation, and turn the university into a sustainable, modern, internationally standard institution of higher learning.
