The Marma community in Bandarban celebrated the traditional Water Festival on Wednesday, marking the third day of a five-day programme observing the end of the outgoing year and the welcoming of the new year.
The festival, locally known as “Maitree Pani Barshan,” involves young men and women splashing water on each other as a symbol of washing away the hardships of the past year and welcoming a hopeful future.
The main event was held at Rajar Math in Bandarban town, attracting hundreds spectators from different parts of the region.
Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) Affairs Minister Dipen Dewan attended the programme and emphasised the importance of promoting the spirit of such inclusive celebrations to strengthen communal harmony in the region.
Bandarban MP Saching Prue Jeri, Bandarban Hill District Council Chairman Professor Thanjama Lusai, Deputy Commissioner Saniul Ferdous, Superintendent of Police Abdur Rahman, along with other officials, public representatives and community leaders attended the programme.
The programme featured traditional cultural performances, adding vibrancy to the celebration.
According to organisers, the Water Festival will continue on Thursday, when State Minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Barrister Mir Helal is expected to attend as the chief guest.
As per the Marma calendar, 16 April marks the last day of the year 1487 Sangrai, with the new year beginning on 17 April.
