Manuel Neuer will stay at Bayern Munich for one more year after signing a new contract that keeps him at the German champions until 2027.
The 40-year-old goalkeeper was due to leave at the end of the season. But Bayern confirmed on Friday that their long-time star will remain for a 16th season in Munich.
“It was a clear decision after taking some time to reflect,” Neuer said.
“All the conditions are met here. With this team we can beat any opponent.”
Neuer remains one of football’s greatest goalkeepers. He finished third in the 2014 Ballon d’Or race behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. He is still the last goalkeeper to make the top three.
German media reports say Neuer is expected to play fewer matches in the 2026-27 season. Bayern are planning a gradual move toward backup keeper Jonas Urbig.
The club also gave third-choice goalkeeper Sven Ulreich a one-year extension.
Neuer retired from international football in 2024 after making 124 appearances for Germany. He won the World Cup in 2014 and remains one of the country’s most successful players.
He recently showed his quality again with a brilliant display against Real Madrid in Bayern’s Champions League quarter-final first leg. His performance earned him UEFA’s man of the match award.
Since joining Bayern from Schalke in 2011, Neuer has built one of the finest careers in club football.
He has won two Champions League trophies and a record-equaling 13 Bundesliga titles. Only teammate Thomas Mueller has matched that league total.
Neuer has missed out on the Bundesliga title only twice during his Bayern career, in his first season in 2011-12 and again in 2023-24.
He has also won the German Cup six times, including five with Bayern and one with Schalke.
