A man was shot dead by unidentified assailants while heading to a mosque for prayers in Rajshahi on Saturday night.
The deceased, Md Mostafa, 50, was the son of Toimur Uddin of Dashmari area. He worked at a flour mill.
The incident took place near the Khojapur graveyard area under Motihar Police Station in the city.
Locals said Mostafa was on his way to the mosque for prayers when miscreants opened fire on him. Residents rescued him in critical condition and rushed him to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
Witnesses said a live bullet and a shell were found at the scene. However, the attackers and the motive behind the incident remain unknown. Family members said Mostafa had no political affiliation.
MA Jalil of the hospital’s emergency department said “Mostafa died before being brought in. He sustained a gunshot injury to his right leg and had marks of injury on his head. Excessive bleeding caused his death before he reached the hospital.”
Gaziyur Rahman, spokesperson of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police and additional deputy commissioner, said “Police rushed to the scene after receiving the information. Law enforcers are investigating the incident.”
He added that police have found no evidence of the victim’s political involvement and efforts are underway to identify and arrest those responsible.
