A man allegedly hacked his distant niece to death before dying by suicide at Srikhandia in Dhaka’s Savar on Wednesday afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Nazrul Islam, 47, and Rekha Begum, 30.
Locals said Nazrul attacked Rekha with a sharp weapon, killing her instantly, before taking his own life.
Police later recovered both bodies and sent them to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital in Dhaka for post‑mortem.
Residents said Rekha’s husband, Russel Mia, has long been living in Dubai, while she remained in Bangladesh with their three children. They also claimed Nazrul and Rekha were involved in a love affair.
Police are investigating the motive behind the incident.
Ashulia Police Station Officer‑in‑charge Tariqul Islam confirmed the incident, saying that the case is being treated with high priority.
