Locals beat a man to death over allegations of theft in Singiar, Manikganj on Monday.
Singiar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Mazharul Islam confirmed the matter. The deceased has been identified as Rajib, 40.
According to local sources, a burglary occurred at the residence of Mohammad Hakim Ali, a resident of Jianagar village, around 2am on Monday. Rajib allegedly entered the tin-shed house by cutting the grill of a window, while four to five of his associates waited outside.
Around Tk4 lakh in cash and 4 bhori of gold jewellery were handed over to the associates outside, who then fled the scene. When Hakim noticed the intrusion and attempted to intervene, an altercation broke out. He sustained an injury on his head and was then rescued and admitted to the Singiar Upazila Health Complex, where he is undergoing treatment.
After the incident, locals reportedly caught Rajib and beat him, resulting in his death on the spot. A local resident, Al-Amin, said Rajib was known to have multiple allegations of theft and robbery against him in the area.
OC Mazharul said on receiving the information, police recovered the body from the spot. Following the inquest report, the process of sending the body to the morgue for an autopsy is underway. He added that the investigation is underway.
