Judicial proceedings at Meherpur District and Sessions Judge’s Court were disrupted on Wednesday after a stone was hurled into the courtroom, sparking panic among lawyers, litigants, and staff.
Meherpur Police Station Officer-in-charge Humayun Kabir confirmed the incident, saying an investigation is underway.
Court police detained the suspect, identified as Sharif of Nutan Sheikhpara in Meherpur town.
Eyewitnesses reported a loud crash as a windowpane shattered and a stone landed inside while the court was in session. Judicial activities were temporarily suspended.
Sharif was presented before the judge in the presence of lawyers, where he admitted to throwing the stone. He claimed he had tried to contact the deputy commissioner and superintendent of police to deliver a message but, after being denied entry, resorted to the act.
He further alleged that the state was not being run properly, insisting there were no cases against him. Court sources, however, noted that his statements became increasingly erratic and contradictory toward the end of his confession.
Following the judge’s order, Sharif was remanded to police custody. A search recovered a notebook and papers containing provocative and ambiguous religious and political writings. The stone itself was seized as evidence.
Masud Rana, a bench assistant, filed a case at the police station detailing the incident.
OC Kabir added that Sharif’s mental condition is also being assessed.
