A case has been filed against an accused, Md Shariful Islam, after he escaped from a Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court. Following the incident, duty police constable Abdul Alim has been suspended, and a three-member committee has been formed to investigate the matter.
The incident occurred on Tuesday when Shariful fled from the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Jamshed Alam. This marks the second time Shariful has escaped from court premises, having previously escaped in 2025.
Confirming the incident, DMP Prosecution Division Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mohiuddin Mahmud Sohel stated that Shariful, an accused prisoner in a case under Kotwali Police Station, cleverly opened his handcuffs and escaped from the court.
He had been brought to court from jail as Tuesday was scheduled for recording witness testimony in the case.
DC Mohiuddin Mahmud Sohel explained that Shariful took advantage of the police officer being distracted to flee through another door. Police are currently working to rearrest him.
Over Tuesday’s escape, CMM Court Lock-up In-charge Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Morshed Alam filed a case as plaintiff at Kotwali Police Station against Shariful Islam.
According to DMP Prosecution Division sources, Shariful was produced before the court on Tuesday, but the witness testimony could not take place as the witness failed to appear.
Afterwards, Prosecution Division Constable Abdul Alim was escorting him from the courtroom to the lock-up when Shariful cleverly unlocked his handcuffs and fled through another exit.
Shariful had previously escaped on 19 June 2025 while being produced at the Dhaka 3rd Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court in connection with the Khilgaon Police Station teenage Jisan Hossain murder case.
Following the hearing on that day, as he was being taken from the courtroom to the lock-up, Shariful struck a police officer, unlocked his handcuffs, and escaped.
Over that 2025 escape, Lock-up In-charge Md Ripon Molla had filed a case against Shariful Islam as plaintiff at the capital’s Kotwali Police Station on the very same day. It was for recording witness testimony in that specific case that Shariful was brought to court from jail on Tuesday.
Shariful is the son of the late Shafiq Ahmed of Haripur village under Nawabganj Police Station in Dinajpur.
