A man was beaten to death and two others were injured after a group of local fishermen allegedly attacked them on suspicion of stealing fishing nets in Islampur upazila of Jamalpur on Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Nur Mohammad, 50, son of Moyan Sheikh of Kunderpara village in Kamarjani union of Gaibandha Sadar upazila.
The incident took place around noon in the Ulia area along the Jamuna River, police said.
According to police, Nur and the two others went to the Barul area of the river in a small boat. Local fishermen allegedly chased them after suspecting them of stealing fishing nets.
The three fled towards Guthail, where fishermen also joined the pursuit.
They were eventually detained by locals after reaching Ulia, police said.
The three were then allegedly beaten by locals, leaving Nur dead at the scene. The other two sustained serious injuries.
The injured were identified as Jahangir, 40, son of Chalim Bepari of Batikamari in Gaibandha, and Rafiqul, 35, son of Ismail of Barkhal village in Dewanganj.
Islampur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mizanur Rahman confirmed the incident and said police had launched an investigation.
“Necessary legal action is being taken in connection with the incident,” he said.
