University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Mamun Ahmed has been elected Chairman of the Governing Board of the South Asian University (SAU) in New Delhi.
He was elected at the university’s 16th Governing Board meeting held in New Delhi on 8 and 9 October, said a press release on Sunday.
He succeeds Kapila Seneviratne of Sri Lanka, the outgoing chairman.
Mamun Ahmed said his election as Bangladesh’s representative on the SAU Governing Board was a matter of honour.
The UGC Chairman is a professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Dhaka. Before becoming the UGC chairman, he served as Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) at DU.
At the 13th board meeting held on 21 August 2024, board members proposed Kapila Seneviratne as the next chairman.
SAU was established in 2010 in New Delhi by eight SAARC countries to increase cooperation in higher education and research, exchange knowledge and strengthen regional solidarity.
