The Walking Dead: Dead City will return for its third season on 26 July, with Maggie and Negan finally setting aside their long-running feud as the series enters a new chapter.
According to Collider, the new season premieres at 9pm ET on Sunday, 26 July 2026, on AMC and AMC+, and will consist of eight episodes, matching the second season. The finale is scheduled for 13 September 2026. The series also welcomes a new showrunner, with Seth Hoffman, a veteran of the original The Walking Dead, replacing Eli Jorné. AMC has not confirmed whether Season 3 will be the show’s last.
Season 2 ended with Maggie and Negan reluctantly joining forces against New Babylon, which sought control of The Croat’s methane production from decomposing walkers. After fierce fighting, Maggie stabbed Negan to stop him from killing Perlie Armstrong. However, the death and transformation of Ginny into a walker led Maggie to see a more vulnerable side of Negan. The season concluded with Maggie, Negan and Armstrong agreeing to leave the past behind and work together to rebuild their world.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan return as Negan and Maggie, alongside Logan Kim as Hershel, Gaius Charles as Perlie Armstrong, Željko Ivanek as The Croat and Lisa Emery as The Dama. The new season also introduces Aimee Garcia as survivor Renata, Jimmi Simpson as Dillard, a bar owner who believes he can communicate with walkers, Raúl Castillo as Luis, and Michael Emery in an undisclosed role.
The story will also expand across more of New York City, with the Empire State Building, Grand Central Station and a Broadway theatre serving as key locations.
AMC has confirmed that Maggie and Negan’s truce will become the emotional centre of the new season. Lauren Cohan told Entertainment Weekly that viewers will witness “the biggest turning over of a new leaf” in the pair’s relationship. For the first time, Maggie openly asks Negan for help instead of manipulating him into assisting her.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan described the upcoming instalment as the show’s “best season by far”. He said viewers would discover new layers to Negan while retaining the character’s core identity.
AMC’s official synopsis says growing chaos in Manhattan will force Maggie and Negan to confront whether they have truly learned from their past or whether old wounds will once again threaten the city’s future.
Hoffman also revealed that the season explores themes of immigration as one community debates whether to welcome newcomers or remain isolated. Another standout episode imagines an alternate reality in which the zombie apocalypse never happened, opening the door for the return of characters absent from the franchise for years. Set photographs featuring Emily Kinney and Lauren Cohan strongly suggest Beth will appear in that episode.
Walkers will also evolve further this season. Hoffman teased that some zombies will have names and display distinct personalities, building on the franchise’s recent introduction of walkers with enhanced abilities.
With fresh characters, expanded settings and Maggie and Negan finally fighting side by side, The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3 aims to take the long-running franchise in a new direction while continuing its post-apocalyptic story.
