Local Government Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that elections to all levels of local government will be completed within the next one year.
He made the announcement on Tuesday while briefing journalists after a local government-related working session of the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Conference held at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium.
The minister also said that investigations would be launched into alleged large-scale corruption in the local government sector over the past 16 years.
Emphasising institutional strengthening, Fakhrul said a strong local government system is essential for a strong state. He said this message was conveyed to deputy commissioners during the conference.
He urged district administrators to take a leading role in implementing development programmes, adding that they must work in coordination with members of parliament and other local representatives to ensure effective execution of government initiatives.
Referring to government priorities, he said development programmes initiated under the administration, including those associated with Tarique Rahman, should be implemented through collective efforts involving all stakeholders.
Calling for people-centred governance, the minister said citizens must remain at the core of all development activities. “The people are the owners of the country. Decisions are ultimately shaped at the grassroots level,” he said.

Describing the DC Conference as productive, Fakhrul said the exchange between field-level administrators and ministries would improve governance outcomes. He added that such coordination would be strengthened further in the future.
