The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has recovered counterfeit local and foreign currency notes worth around Tk 20 crore from a rented apartment in the Baklia area of Chattogram city. A 20-year-old man named Tanjim has been arrested in connection with the incident. RAB recovers counterfeit Bangladeshi Taka along with fake US dollars, euros, riyals, and dirhams.
According to RAB, the seizure was made around 4 pm on Tuesday (October 14) during a raid at a flat in the Nurnagar Housing Society, located about one kilometre from Bahaddarhat.
RAB-7 Commander Lt. Col. Md Hafizur Rahman said that the counterfeit notes appear to be of high quality.
“According to the laws of Bangladesh, no individual or private entity is permitted to print or reproduce currency of any kind. These fake local and foreign banknotes were being marketed and traded through online platforms,” he said.
He added, “We have already detained two more individuals linked to the printing operation. Interrogations are underway to identify others involved. We expect to share further details once the investigation progresses.”
When questioned, the arrested suspect Tanjim claimed that the counterfeit notes were produced for use as movie or video props. “The money was printed at Ankur Printers, located in Andarkilla. I used to pay Tk 30 per bundle for printing and sold each bundle for Tk 600. It was profitable for me. Since these are not authorized by the government, they are technically fake notes,” he said.
RAB sources revealed that the operation in Chattogram followed a similar raid in Sylhet, where another individual had been arrested with a large volume of counterfeit currency. Based on information extracted from that suspect, RAB-7 conducted the follow-up raid in Baklia, leading to this major recovery.
