The Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) on Thursday launched work to build a post-disaster damage database for three pilot districts, aiming to sharpen climate-risk identification and guide future infrastructure investment.
The initiative will cover Satkhira, Bhola and Barguna under the Climate Resilient Local Infrastructure Centre, or CReLIC, which operates under the Climate Resilient Infrastructure Mainstreaming Project, or CRIMP, implemented by LGED.
The programme was outlined at an inception workshop on “Loss and Damage Assessment” held at the seminar room of LGED headquarters in Dhaka.
LGED Chief Engineer Md Belal Hossain, the chief guest, said the database would compile post-disaster losses in the three districts and use geospatial data to support evidence-based risk identification, strategic planning and targeted investment decisions.
LGED Additional Chief Engineer and CReLIC Director Md Azharul Islam presided over the workshop.
Professor Hasan Mahmud, team leader of consulting firm NACOM-O.CREEDS JV, presented the methodology for collecting disaster loss and damage data and the overall work plan.
Representatives from the Department of Environment, Bangladesh Meteorological Department, Department of Disaster Management, Public Works Department and Bangladesh Water Development Board attended the workshop and shared their views.
Other LGED officials present included Additional Chief Engineers Syeda Asma Khatun, Kazi Saiful Kabir and Md Wahiduzzaman, Superintending Engineers Md Akhter Hossain and Md Golam Mowla, Project Director of CRIMP-CReLIC Md Abdul Khaleque, CReLIC Executive Engineer Fatema Ismat Ara, Assistant Engineer Arpan Paul, and specialist consultants from CReLIC.
