Barcelona marched out of San Mamés with a gritty 1–0 win on Saturday night, thanks to a moment of teenage brilliance from Lamine Yamal that kept Hansi Flick’s side four points clear of Real Madrid in the La Liga title race.

Real Madrid had trimmed the gap a day earlier with victory over Celta Vigo. Barcelona answered the pressure the only way contenders can, by grinding through a brutal away night in Bilbao.

Flick shuffled the pack before kick-off. The Barcelona boss rotated heavily with Tuesday’s Champions League last-16 trip to Newcastle looming. The changes drained rhythm from the visitors early and the first half drifted into a scrappy arm wrestle.

Athletic smelled vulnerability. João Cancelo nearly gifted the hosts an absurd opener when a loose touch sent the ball clattering against his own crossbar. Moments later Selton Sánchez burst through on goal, only for Barcelona goalkeeper Joan García to dive at his feet and rip the ball away.

Ernesto Valverde’s side even celebrated once. Iñaki Williams slipped behind the defence and finished calmly before the assistant’s flag sliced the move apart. Offside killed the roar inside San Mamés and spared Barcelona an ugly half-time problem.

Barcelona offered little going forward. Ferran Torres drifted through another frustrating night up front. His movement lacked bite, his touches lacked conviction and Athletic’s centre-backs rarely broke sweat.

The match exploded into life after the break. Both sides demanded red cards within minutes. Barcelona howled for Alejandro Rego’s dismissal after a crunching challenge on Dani Olmo, while Athletic fans screamed for Pau Cubarsí to walk after hauling down Williams. The referee reached for yellow cards both times and kept the temperature just below boiling.

Joan García then produced the save that preserved Barcelona’s patience. Oihan Sancet found rare space in the box and drilled a fierce effort toward the bottom corner. García reacted instantly and clawed the shot away, a reminder that Bilbao carried just enough threat to punish any lapse.

Then Yamal delivered the only real flash of class. Pedri slipped the ball wide to the teenager in the 68th minute. Athletic full-back Adama Boiro lunged, slipped and gifted Yamal half a yard of freedom. The 18-year-old needed nothing more.

Yamal bent a vicious shot toward the far corner. The ball kissed the inside of the post and flew into the net. San Mamés fell silent while Barcelona’s bench erupted.

That strike marked his nineteenth goal of the season in all competitions, yet the timing mattered more than the tally. Barcelona had struggled to unlock Bilbao all night. Yamal solved the puzzle with one swing of his boot.

Athletic threw bodies forward in the final minutes but Barcelona controlled the chaos. Flick’s rotated side lacked fluency yet protected the lead with cold discipline.
