Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury narrowly escaped injury on Friday after a temporary stage collapsed during a relief distribution programme for flood victims in Dohazari Municipality, under Chandanaish upazila of Chattogram.
The incident occurred around 11:30am shortly after the minister arrived at the venue.
Witnesses reported that the temporary platform gave way under the weight of many people moments after the minister stepped onto it, causing him and several others to fall.
Other notable figures present on the stage during the collapse included Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Sahadat Hossain, lawmaker for Chattogram-14 Jashim Uddin Ahmed, Patiya MP Enamul Haque, Boalkhali MP Ershad Ullah, and South District BNP leaders.
Chandanaish Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Abdur Rahman confirmed the incident, noting that the small stage was unable to withstand the pressure of the crowd. He further clarified that no one on the platform sustained any serious injuries.
Following the collapse, the minister departed the venue to continue his scheduled visit to Satkania. In the wake of his departure, a rush broke out among flood victims during the relief distribution, though the UNO confirmed the programme was eventually completed.
The minister’s tour of flood-hit areas on Friday also included visits to Patenga, Banshkhali, and Lohagara, where he attended multiple relief distribution programmes as the chief guest.
