Keanu Reeves is set to reprise his role as legendary hitman John Wick in Lionsgate’s upcoming animated prequel film, which will explore the character’s origins.
According to Variety, the story will follow Wick as he undertakes the Impossible Task, killing all his rivals in a single night to fulfil his obligation to the High Table and earn the freedom to be with his love, Helen.
Shannon Tindle, known for directing Netflix’s ‘Ultraman: Rising’ and his work on ‘Kubo and the Two Strings’, will direct the film from a screenplay by Ryan and Kaz Firpo.
The film will be produced by the franchise’s established team, including Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee of Thunder Road, Chad Stahelski of 87Eleven Entertainment, and Reeves. Production company Point Grey will also join the project.
When the animated film was announced in 2025, Lionsgate motion picture chair Adam Fogelson said the Impossible Task was a story fans particularly wanted to see explored. He also praised Tindle’s vision for bringing the story to animation.
The ‘John Wick’ franchise has grossed more than $1 billion worldwide across five films, including the Ana de Armas-led spin-off ‘Ballerina’.
Lionsgate continues to expand the franchise, with a fifth live-action ‘John Wick’ film in development. A standalone film centred on Donnie Yen’s blind assassin, Caine, is also planned.
