The government has temporarily suspended Shireen Akter, the Jailer of Kashimpur Central Women’s Prison in Gazipur, following the escape of a female convict who scaled the prison’s boundary wall.
The order was issued on Monday through a notification signed by Senior Secretary Tanveer-al-Nasif of the Prisons-1 branch of the Ministry of Home Affairs. According to the proclamation, the Prisons Directorate submitted a report to the Ministry citing extreme negligence in the discharge of Jailer Akter’s duties and responsibilities.
The suspension has been enacted under the Public Service Act, and the notification further clarified that she will receive a subsistence allowance during this period in accordance with standard financial regulations.
The incident occurred on the evening of 16 July at approximately 7:50pm. The convict, identified as 21-year-old Rumpa, managed to flee by scaling the perimeter wall on the southern side of the Jailer’s official residence. Prison authorities confirmed the method of escape after reviewing CCTV footage.
Rumpa had been serving a three-month sentence handed down by a mobile court in connection with a CR case filed at Dhanmondi Police Station in the capital. She had been incarcerated at Kashimpur Central Women’s Prison since 9 July. Following the escape, she was apprehended on Sunday in the Hazaribagh area of Dhaka by a team from RAB-2.
The prison break has triggered widespread national discussion and raised serious questions regarding the security measures of the prison administration. In response, the Prisons Directorate has taken steps to investigate the matter.
