Former US vice president Kamala Harris has said she is considering another run for the White House in 2028, signalling that her political ambitions remain alive despite last year’s defeat to Donald Trump.
In an interview with the BBC, Harris said she still sees herself playing an active role in American politics and believes that the US will “definitely” have a woman president in her grandnieces’ lifetime, possibly even herself.
Asked directly whether she might seek the presidency again, Harris replied, “Possibly,” adding that while no final decision had been made, she remains deeply committed to public service. “I am not done,” she said. “Service is in my bones. It is who I am.”
The remarks mark her strongest signal yet that she may join the race for the 2028 Democratic nomination, as her party continues to grapple with the fallout from Trump’s sweeping victory a year ago.
While many Democrats have faulted Joe Biden for not stepping aside earlier, some have also questioned whether Harris could have run a more effective campaign with a stronger economic message.
Harris brushed aside recent polls ranking her far behind other potential contenders including actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson saying she had never allowed public opinion to dictate her career.
“If I had listened to polls, I wouldn’t have run for my first or second office. And I certainly wouldn’t be sitting here today,” she said.
Turning her attention to Donald Trump, Harris accused the president of acting like a “tyrant” and said her earlier warnings about his authoritarian tendencies had proven correct.
She claimed Trump had “weaponised” federal institutions, including the Department of Justice, and targeted critics in the media.
Citing the suspension of comedian Jimmy Kimmel after a joke about right-wing figure Charlie Kirk, Harris said Trump’s government had pressured broadcasters to silence dissent. “His skin is so thin he couldn’t tolerate a joke and tried to shut down an entire network in response,” she said.
Harris also criticised corporate leaders who, in her view, had surrendered to Trump’s influence. “Too many have bowed to a tyrant, eager to stay close to power whether to secure a merger or avoid an investigation,” she said.
The White House swiftly dismissed her remarks. Spokeswoman Abigail Jackson said Harris was “airing her grievances to foreign media” instead of accepting her electoral defeat.
Harris, who recently released a memoir titled 107 Days chronicling her brief and turbulent presidential campaign following Biden’s withdrawal insisted her story in politics is far from over.
