The National Moon Sighting Committee to meet on Wednesday evening to determine the start of the holy month of Ramadan and the date of the first fast.
The meeting is scheduled for 6pm after Maghrib prayers at the Islamic Foundation conference room, located at the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.
The session will be chaired by the new Religious Affairs Minister, Kazi Shah Mofazzal Hossain Kaikobad, who will also attend as the chief guest. The final decision regarding the moon sighting will be based on information received from various district administrations across the country.
The Islamic Foundation has requested that anyone sighting the Ramadan moon anywhere in the Bangladesh sky inform the relevant Deputy Commissioner (DC) or Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) immediately.
An official announcement regarding the commencement of the fast will be made following the conclusion of the meeting.
According to a potential schedule released by the Islamic Foundation for the Dhaka district, Ramadan may begin on 19 February.
However, the start of the first fast remains strictly dependent on the sighting of the moon.
If the moon is sighted, Taraweeh prayers will commence, and the first fast will be observed tomorrow after Sehri. If the moon is not sighted, the month of Shaban will complete 30 days, and the counting of the month of Ramadan will begin the following day.
