A Gazipur court on Monday granted a two-day remand for Tahrima Jannat Suravi, who identifies herself as a ‘July activist,’ in a case filed with Kaliakair Police Station over extortion and related charges.
Judicial Magistrate Syed Fazlul Mahadi approved the remand after police requested five days.
Suravi, daughter of Md Selim, resides in Gopalpur, Tongi East, Gazipur.
According to Sub-Inspector Omar Faruk, the investigating officer of Kaliakair Police, Suravi was arrested a few days ago following a complaint filed by journalist Naimur Rahman Durjoy. The case includes allegations of extortion, abduction for ransom, and blackmail. A court-issued arrest warrant had been issued prior to her detention.
Suravi was taken into custody on the night of 24 December during a joint operation at her home in Tekpara, Gopalpur, Tongi East. Police said the case is being investigated seriously.
Speaking to reporters, her father Md Selim said he was not at home when his daughter was arrested. “She participated in the July mass uprising against the government, and these allegations against her are entirely false,” he said.
Police sources confirmed that Suravi was a warrant-listed accused in the case filed by journalist Durjoy at Kaliakair Police Station.
