After a 45-hour wait, the results of the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) and Hall Union elections are finally being announced by the respective returning officers. The results for all 21 Hall Unions were announced first.
The formal declaration began at 5:15pm on Saturday, with the Election Commission announcing the results at the Senate Building.
At the beginning of the result announcement, a minute of silence was observed in honor of Jannatul Ferdous, the assistant professor from the Department of Fine Arts and the returning officer for Preetilata Hall, who passed away while performing her duties during the election.
The announcement ceremony was attended by Chief Election Commissioner Monirujjaman, Secretary AKM Rashidul Alam, member Lutful Elahi, and faculty members from various departments of the university.
Earlier in the afternoon, the university’s Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration), Professor Sohel Ahmed, confirmed that the vote counting was completed at 2:30 PM.
13 No (Female) Hall Union
In this hall, Nahadatun Hasana was elected as Vice President (VP), Mohsina Tuba as General Secretary (GS), and Sadiya Mehjabin as Assistant General Secretary (AGS).
Al-Beruni Hall Union
Rifat Ahmed Shakil was elected VP, Muntasir Billah Khan as GS, and Sadman Hasan Khan as AGS.
Nawab Faizunnessa Hall Union
Bubli Ahmed was elected unopposed as VP, Sumaiya Khanam as GS, and there were no candidates for AGS.
10 No (Male) Hall Union
Asif Mia was elected VP, Mehdi Hasan as GS, and Nadim Mahmud as AGS.
15 No (Female) Hall Union
Sharmeen Khatun was elected VP unopposed, Mehnaz Mohona as GS, and Shahana Akter as AGS.
Shaheed Salam-Barkat Hall Union
Maruf Hossain was elected VP, Masud Rana as GS, and Abrar Azim Bhuiya as AGS.
Maulana Bhashani Hall Union
Abdul Hai Swapan was elected VP, Hriday Poddar as GS, and Rakib Hasan as AGS.
Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall Union
Khaled Jubayer was elected VP, Shahriar Nazim as GS, and Arafat Hossain as AGS.
AFM Kamal Uddin Hall Union
GMAM Raihan Kabir was elected VP, Abrar Shahriar as GS, and Ripon Mondol as AGS unopposed.
National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam Hall Union
Rakibul Islam was elected VP, Ali Ahmed as GS, and Samin Yasir as AGS.
21 No (Male) Hall Union
Ibn Shihab was elected VP, Oliuallah Mahadi as GS, and Tushar Ahmed as AGS.
Shaheed Rafiq-Jabbar Hall Union
Mehdi Hasan was elected VP, Shariful Islam as GS, and Ariful Islam as AGS.
Fazilatunnesa Hall Union
Aishi Sarkar was elected VP unopposed, Farzana Tabassum as GS, and Proma Raha as AGS.
Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Hall Union
Sifat Ullah was elected VP, Mahmudul Hasan as GS, and Tariq Ahmed as AGS.
Begum Khaleda Zia Hall Union
Farhana Rahman was elected VP, Fatema Tuz-Zohra as GS, and Raihana Sultana as AGS.
Biswakabi Rabindranath Tagore all Hall Union
Amit Kumar Banik was elected VP, Mahmudul Hasan as GS, and Mirza Adnan Islam as AGS unopposed.
The voting for the JUCSU elections took place on Thursday. After voting was completed in all 21 residential halls, the ballot boxes were taken to the Senate Hall, where counting continued for approximately 40 hours.
A total of 11,743 voters were registered for the JUCSU election, with about 68 percent of votes cast. A total of 177 candidates competed for 25 positions, with nine candidates for VP, eight for GS, 16 for AGS, and six female candidates.
This year, eight panels participated in the election, including the Bangladesh Democratic Students’ Union (BDSU)-backed Shikkharthi Oikkya Forum, Islami Chhatra Shibir’s Shomonnito Shikkharti Jote, the Chhatra Dal-backed panel, three leftist panels, and two independent panels.
Shibir-backed Shomonnito Shikkharthi Jote
Islami Chhatra Shibir announced the first complete panel, naming Arifulah Adib as VP and Mazharul Islam as GS from their panel. Ferdous Al Hasan and Ayesha Siddika Meghla were nominated for AGS and Female AGS respectively. This panel includes six female students, alongside several injured participants from the July movement and a couple currently studying at the university.
Bangladesh Ganatantrik Chhatra Sangshad-backed Shikkharthi Oikkya Forum
Full panel of 23 members included Arifuzzaman Ujjal as VP, Abu Tauhid Md Siam as GS, Malisha Namla as Female Joint Secretary, and Zia Uddin Ayan as Male Joint Secretary.
Chhatra Dal-backed Panel
The Chhatra Dal-backed panel put forth a 25-member panel, with Sheikh Sadi Hasan as VP, Tanzila Hossain Baishakhi as GS (the only female candidate), and Sajjadul Islam and Anjuman Ara Ikra for AGS (Male) and AGS (Female) respectively.
Shompreetir Oikkya
This panel, supported by the Student Union, Shomajtanrik Chhatra Front, and Shangskritik Jote, had 25 members, though it participated without a VP candidate. Sharan Ehsan from the Drama and Theatre Department was nominated for GS, while Nur E Tameem Srot and Faria Zaman Niki were named for AGS (Male) and AGS (Female).
Shongshoptok Parshad
Formed by factions of the Chhatra Union (Emon-Tanjim) and the Shomajtanrik Chhatra Front, this panel, which also did not have a VP candidate, nominated Zahidul Islam Iman as GS, with Sohagi Samia Jannatul Ferdous and Tanzeel Ahmed as AGS (Female) and AGS (Male) respectively.
Shomajtanrik Chhatra Front (one faction)
The Jahangirnagar University branch of the Shomajtanrik Chhatra Front (One Faction) has announced a partial panel for the JUCSU election. The panel includes Md Sajib Ahmed Jenish as the candidate for Male Assistant General Secretary (AGS), along with Rokeya Amin Anushua for Female Executive Member and Md Suman Hossain for Male Executive Member.
Shotontro Chhatra Sommilon
In addition to the active student organisations, two independent panels have been announced for this year’s JUCSU election. The panel named Shotontro Chhatra Sommilon has Md Abdur Rashid Jitu, Convener of the Movement for the Protection of the People’s Uprising, running for the Vice President (VP) position.
Md Shakil Ali, a student from the History Department’s 48th batch, is contesting for General Secretary (GS), while Touhidul Islam Nibir Bhuiyan is competing for Male AGS. Notably, this panel has not fielded any candidates for female AGS.
Shotontro Ongikar Parishad
Another partial panel has been formed by a group of students from various social and cultural organizations, under the name Independent Pledge Council.
The panel includes Md Mahfuzul Islam Megh, Spokesperson of the Jahangirnagar Cultural Alliance, running for VP, and Md Nazmul Islam, a rebel candidate from BDSU, competing for Male GS. No candidates have been put forward for the Male or Female AGS positions in this panel.
