Bangladesh Jubo Odhikar Parishad staged a torch procession in the capital on Monday night to press home their demand for trial of attackers on Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur.
Meanwhile, Gono Odhikar Parishad threatened to launch a tougher programme to realise the demand.
The procession was brought out at 7pm from in front of the party headquarters in the capital. It marched through Paltan intersection.
Faruk Hasan, a spokesperson for Gono Odhikar Parishad, said although the government promised to facilitate overseas medical treatment for Nur, no concrete steps were taken yet.
“This delay is unacceptable. The attackers are still at large,” he said.
“We reject the assurance given by Prof Muhammad Yunus on behalf of the interim government. We, as a party and as a family, will ensure that Nur receives treatment abroad.”
The party also issued a 48-hour ultimatum. If a visible action is not taken within this time, we will announce a tougher programme.
Speaking at the programme, Jubo Odhikar Parishad President Monjur Morshed Mamun described Nurul Haque Nur as “a living legend and the hero of the July Uprising”.
He said, “Attacking Nur is equivalent to betraying the blood of the July Uprising. When the Awami League government harassed Prof Yunus through legal cases, Gono Odhikar Parishad stood by him.”
“When Bangladesh Chhatra League locked Dr Asif Nazrul’s department, Nur led the charge to break that lock. When Adviser Adilur Rahman was jailed, the student and youth wings of Gono Odhikar Parishad “staged protests.”
Yet now, when Nur himself is attacked, the interim government remains silent. We call on the interim government not to be so ungrateful. Justice for the attack on Nur must be served.”
