A local Juba Dal activist was hacked to death and his younger brother injured in a knife attack in Panchbibi upazila of Joypurhat late on Thursday night.

Police identified the dead man as Yanul Hossain, 31, from Shalaipur village in Panchbibi.

His brother, Abdul Momin, 22, also sustained injuries. They are the sons of Alam Hossain.

The attack took place around 11pm at the Shalaipur Bazar–Dhakarpara road junction. Witnesses said a group of rivals ambushed the two brothers and stabbed them repeatedly with sharp weapons before fleeing.

Locals rushed Yanul to Mahipur Upazila Health Complex in Panchbibi, where doctors declared him dead. Momin received first aid for his injuries.

Locals linked the attack to previous rivalry between the groups.

Golam Rabbani, former joint convener of Joypurhat district Juba Dal, said there is currently no Juba Dal committee in the district but described Yanul as an active supporter who had long worked with the party.

Officer-in-Charge Abdul Hafiz Md Raihan of Panchbibi police station confirmed the incident.

He said Yanul died from stab wounds inflicted by rivals. Police are investigating to determine the motive.

Yanul’s body was sent to the morgue of Joypurhat 250-bed General Hospital for post-mortem examination.

The family has not yet filed a complaint. Police will register a case once a complaint is submitted.
