Jahangirnagar University (JU) has announced the suspension of all classes, weekend programmes, and examinations from 9 March to 28 March, aligning its Eid holiday schedule with government directives to save electricity and fuel.
An emergency syndicate meeting presided over by the university’s Vice-Chancellor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan made the decision on Sunday night. The meeting reviewed the Ministry of Education’s notification and a letter sent by the University Grants Commission (UGC) regarding the matter.
While academic activities are suspended, the university’s administrative activities will continue according to the previously determined schedule. However, it was informed during the meeting that all university offices will remain closed from 17 March to 26 March.
According to the Ministry of Education, several measures were ordered to ensure the conservation of electricity and fuel during office hours. These include avoiding the use of electric lights when there is sufficient natural light, and refraining from using unnecessary lights, fans, and air conditioners.
Air conditioners must be maintained at a temperature of 25 degrees Celsius or higher.
The instructions also indicate that all electrical equipment must be switched off when leaving office rooms, and unnecessary lighting in corridors, stairs, and washrooms must be discontinued.
The use of energy-efficient equipment must be ensured, and all types of electrical machinery must be turned off after office hours.
The syndicate meeting further emphasised that instructions regarding the avoidance of unnecessary illumination, limiting the use of vehicles, and being frugal with fuel consumption must be strictly followed by all.
