Police have arrested banned Chhatra League (BCL) leader Al Mahmud Dipu during the ongoing “Devil Hunt Operation.”
Dipu studied Chemistry in the 2019–20 academic session at Jahangirnagar University (JU) and was a resident student of JU’s AFM Kamaluddin Hall. Later, the university expelled him.
Police said Dipu had connections to violence during the July mass uprising, as well as vandalism and arson following the 12th parliamentary election in 2024.
Dipu was arrested around 10pm on Tuesday from his residence in the Piarapur Jonglapara area of Shakhahar union in Gaibandha’s Gobindaganj upazila, police said.
Selim Reza, sub-inspector of Gobindaganj Police Station, led the arrest operation, with Sub-inspectors Anisur Rahman and Mominul Islam, while other officials also took part.
Police sources said Dipu remained active ahead of the anniversary of the Chhatra League.
Following complaints filed by leaders and activists of Jatiya Chhatra Shakti in Gaibandha, law enforcement agencies stepped up surveillance, which led to the arrest.
SI Selim Reza said the arrest was made in connection with a case over attacks, vandalism, and arson at shops in the Phulpukuria Bazar area after the 12th national election, and violence during the July mass movement in 2024.
Gobindaganj Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge Mozammel Haque said police detained Dipu as part of the “Devil Hunt Operation.”
Police will produce him before a court on Wednesday after completing legal formalities, he said.
