Bangladesh seized command of the Test on Wednesday in Sylhet as their openers led a dominant response to Ireland’s first innings total. The hosts closed Day 2 on 338 for one, holding a 52-run lead after a day that belonged entirely to their batters.
Ireland had resumed in the morning on 270 for eight but could add only 16 runs before being bowled out for 286. Bangladesh then made full use of the placid surface, with Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Shadman Islam putting together a composed 168-run opening stand. Shadman fell for 92 to Matthew Humphreys, who was the only Irish bowler to find a breakthrough.
Mahmudul remained unbeaten on 169 at stumps, a career-best innings that anchored Bangladesh’s dominance. Mominul Haque joined him at the crease and, after a nervous start, settled to guide the hosts safely into the lead.
For Ireland, it was a long and fruitless day. Their bowlers maintained discipline for much of the afternoon but created few chances, and a dropped catch by Paul Stirling late in the session summed up their frustration. With the pitch still offering little assistance, Ireland will hope the second new ball on Day 3 provides a way back into the contest.
