The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) organised a sports festival at Milestone School and College on Sunday, aimed at helping students overcome mental trauma and return to a normal school life.

The event, which commenced at 10:30am at the school’s Uttara campus, featured national cricket star Mushfiqur Rahim as a special guest.

According to a statement from JICA, the initiative was designed to alleviate the panic and mental stress experienced by students following a plane crash that occurred at the school.

The accident left a profound psychological impact on students, teachers, and affected families, resulting in nearly 100 students being unable to attend classes regularly in the months following the crash.

The sports festival was co-hosted by Milestone School and College, with implementation support from Japan’s MUFG Bank and the social welfare organisation Ekmattra Society.

JICA and its partners identified a need for collective, stimulating activities alongside formal counselling to rebuild the students’ connection to their school environment.

The festival fostered a joyful atmosphere through cricket and various team-based activities.

JICA expressed hope that students would find mental relief through participation, teamwork, and spending time together. The partnership is being viewed as a model initiative for the holistic development of children during times of crisis.

The presence of Mushfiqur Rahim added significant value to the event. JICA believes that his journey from a student at the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishtan (BKSP) to a national success story will help students regain their self-confidence.

JICA also highlighted its long-standing relationship with the BKSP, noting that approximately 30 Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers have contributed to the country’s sports development through the institution over the years.

Approximately 1,300 students, teachers, and parents participated in the festival, which provided students with the opportunity to spend time with their peers in a cheerful and supportive environment.
