A gold jeweller has been shot dead after being lured out of his home in Raipura upazila of Narsingdi.
The victim, Pranotosh Karmakar, 42, was the son of Shadhan Sarkar of Dighliakandi village and a jewellery trader at the local Notun Bazar.
The incident took place around 8pm on Tuesday at the playground of Dighliakandi Government Primary School.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Sujan Chandra Sarkar said the motive behind the killing is still unclear.
According to the victim’s family, several masked men came to the house around 8pm. They called Pranotosh outside, saying they needed to discuss business and financial transactions.
Family members asked him not to go, but the men persuaded him and took him to the nearby school grounds.
Moments later, the assailants shot him in the chest and fled.
The victim’s sister-in-law, Hena Rani Sarkar, said two men came to call him. “One of them had his face uncovered, but the other had his face covered,” she said.
Raipura Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) Prabir Kumar Ghosh said police suspect the killing may be linked to extortion money demanded from the trader.
The body has been recovered and an investigation is under way.
